In 1939, a physician in Waterloo, Iowa and a member of the Methodist church left a will in which he set aside a trust fund of $70,000 to be administered by four trustees for the advancement of the fundamental tenets of the Christian religion.  The will specified that the proceeds of the fund were to be disbursed to those “persons who believe in the fundamental principles of the Christian religion and who are endeavoring to promulgate the same.”  It further stipulated that the income from the fund was to be distributed to “such persons and for such purposes as they (the trustees) may feel are directed by God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and as they believe would be acceptable to me (the testator) and meet my approval.”
